As the holidays begin and we prepare for a new decade, it’s time to think ahead. What will interior design look like in 2020 beyond? Which home design trends will dominate?
Today, we take a look at some predictions for home design next year. Some of these are ideas we’ve discussed before – others are totally new.
1. Fluid spaces for living
In previous articles, we’ve talked about the power of ergonomic office design. But free-floating, fluid spaces aren’t just for work! We’re seeing more flexible, multi-use spaces that enable a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle.
2. Smart and sustainable homes
Smart gadgets, energy meters, solar panels, green roofs and recycled materials – our homes will become a lot more eco-friendly during the 2020s. Energy-efficient homes will make life simpler and more sustainable.
3. Textures from the natural world
Here’s one area where retro materials are in fashion: furniture and furnishings. We’re thinking sustainable materials like bamboo or seagrass, old-school luxury like velvet or marble, and upcycled and vintage pieces.
4. Deep, dramatic colors
The 2010s were dominated by soft, pastel colors and neutrals like beige or millennial pink. But those shades are now definitively out of style. Instead, we’re seeing deep, bright, jewel tones in green, blue, purple and red. And yes – for the purposes of this trend, black is a color, not a neutral.
5. Lines, not curves
Here’s another shift in interior design tastes. The last decade was all about naturalistic shapes and curves. But now we’re turning back to clean-cut lines, angular art deco furniture, and geometric patterns.
6. Lighting in the limelight
Forget accent walls and works of art. The real statement piece in your home is now… the light fixtures. We’re seeing more designers put lighting on center stage. Look out for one-of-a-kind, artisanal light fixtures that make your home décor shine.
