In today’s post, we’re talking about one of the cornerstones of interior design: lighting. And while the correct lighting is important in every space, it’s especially vital for bathroom design. Here are four basic elements to think about when you’re considering a new build or bathroom renovation.
1. Bathroom lighting should be functional…
First things first: every bathroom should have enough light that people can see comfortably. In particular, you may want to place extra lights around mirrors, or in enclosed spaces such as shower cubicles.
2. … and designed for atmosphere
Think about the atmosphere you want to create in your bathroom space.
For many people, their home bathroom is a place of peace and sanctuary – so it’s best to avoid glaring lights. Consider using soft spotlights or dimmer switches so that you can adjust the light level to suit your mood.
However, bathrooms for office or retail spaces are more functional and professional. Lighting should be bright, simple, and unobtrusive.
3. Choose safe, reliable lighting that will last
There are always safety issues to consider when you install lighting. Remember that bathrooms are spaces with plenty of moisture, so you will need to have wiring and lighting installed by skilled professionals. Choose light fittings which will stand the test of time and humidity.
Once again, consider your specific use of the space. If you are designing a bathroom which will be used by customers or an office team, choose lighting which can be easily maintained.
4. Don’t forget about natural light
Our best source of light is the sun itself. Don’t be afraid to let natural light in to your bathroom design. A smart interior designer will be able to maximize natural light without compromising your privacy!
