Picking out new chairs, tables and couches is one of the most enjoyable parts of interior design. Whether you’re renovating or starting from scratch, updating your home design or upgrading an office, here are some essential questions to keep in mind when you’re choosing furniture.
1. Is it comfortable?
Let’s start with the most important point. Whether it’s a dining room chair or a bathroom cabinet, every piece of furniture should be easy and comfortable to use. That means no uncomfortable couches, drawers that stick, or cabinet doors which are too high for you to reach.
2. How will this piece be used?
Think about wear and tear. Are you choosing a statement piece of furniture, or something that will get used by your family each day? Depending on your needs, each piece of furniture should be appropriately robust. Think about how materials will stand up to scrapes or spills – especially if you have children in the house!
3. Where will I place this piece?
Sometimes you fall in love with a beautiful piece… but you have to admit that it just won’t fit in the house. Before you go shopping for furniture, take precise measurements of the space you have available. It’s a good idea to measure the size ofyour doorways, too, so you can avoid any problems when moving furniture into the house.
4. What will this look like in 5 years?
As well as daily use, materials will naturally age over time. In some cases – such as natural wood materials – furniture becomes more beautiful over time. But some pieces or materials will age badly. Think about how long you plan to use this piece before replacing it.
5. Is this a good use of my budget?
There’s nothing wrong with splashing out on a piece you love. Just make sure that you can still balance the budget! If in doubt, talk to a designer and explain your priorities. Then you can decide together where to splurge, and where to save.
